US McDonnell Douglas Aerospace is completing the advanced development of laser radar. This work is part of the Advanced Guidance Program of the U.S. Air Force Cruise Missile to enable cruise missiles to accomplish more missions. The company signed a $ 12 million contract with the Air Force for the development program and is actively researching the contract. The contract’s goal is to develop and test all-weather lidar guidance systems that provide missiles with mid-range positioning, topographical and obstacle avoidance capabilities, and identification and tracking of targets. The prototype is scheduled to be demonstrated in February 1988 and is expected to be installed on General Dynamics Tomahawk cruise missiles.
