Aging is a process in which individual vitality experiences a decline in the index leading to death. By studying the molecular mechanism of Caenorhabditis elegans, we greatly broaden our knowledge of aging. A variety of longevity pathways control nematode senescence, such as insulin-like growth factor signaling, TOR signaling, dietary restriction and mitochondrial activity. Recent genetic studies have shown that autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved lysosomal degradation pathway that co-regulate the lifespan of nematodes with a variety of long-lived signals. Therefore, we review the progress of autophagy in regulating the lifespan of nematodes.
