Network administrators saw the benefits of Sonet (synchronous optical network) as the basis for ATM and WAN to enable the network to forward data at a higher rate. But network managers also need to think about the expense and complexity that are important issues that can arise when using ATM to offload LAN traffic to SonetWAN. Since 5 bytes per 48 bytes in the ATM cells are a header, actually 60 Mbps of bandwidth is lost for each OC-12 (622 Mbps) channel.
