本届威尼斯双年展开放展主持人——兹曼,一位老资格的瑞士策划人,左派思潮喧嚣的六十年代末曾不失时机地把波依斯推向了大师的前台,为战后的欧洲艺术重新找到了某种价值坐标。其后又创造了一系列不俗的策划业绩。在文化将要沉睡的时候,他似乎总能敲响惊世骇俗的重锤,发出清晰而富于锐气的思想召唤,同时也把观众引向了某种理解的深渊。双年展董事会选择这样一位有着“造反派”劲头的策划界“老运动员”连续主持本世纪最后一届和下一世纪第一届威尼斯双年展,必然是寄托了深意。可以想见,他身上的那种源自大陆欧洲的强烈的乌托邦色彩和理想精神依然被知识界视为思想领域的宝贵财富。
