两宋时期,东亚各国的国内、国际局势均发生了重大变化,原来以隋唐帝国为核心的东亚格局也随之改变。这一时期,中国与高丽、日本等东亚诸国的关系日益密切和复杂化。各国之间既有使节互访,也有僧侣往来和双边或多边贸易,以中外僧侣为主体的东亚佛教交流活动,是当时东亚国际关系的主要内容之一。在特定的历史时期,佛教僧侣充当了国际关系中的重要角色,他们既是文化交流的主力军,也是当时东亚国际关系的主要调节因素。
