媵妾与报是流行于西周春秋贵族阶层的一种婚姻制度 ,其形式类似于氏族社会晚期的对偶婚与收继婚。宗法制度下 ,周王室以异姓联姻手段扩大其统治基础 ,构筑严密的血缘关系网 ;各级贵族则希望凭借联姻增强实力 ,婚姻的政治意义空前突出 ,因此需求一种有助于长期稳固婚姻关系的婚姻方式。于是 ,媵妾与报制度应运而生。媵妾从嫁为未雨绸缪 ,子侄报则为亡羊补牢 ,二者相辅相成 ,互为补充 ,可以有效地延续婚姻寿命 ,对于稳定西周春秋时期政治局面 ,协调各级贵族关系起了积极作用
