近代域外小说大量译介引入中国之初期,小说理论批评家聚焦于直接对比中外小说,形成了近代小说理论批评史上的一个独特现象。褒扬域外小说而否定中国旧小说,主要从作者身份、地位价值、创作主旨、思想题材出发,这既源于域外小说译介下新观念的启迪,也受到中国传统文论及小说理论所隐含的深层次认知结构和价值取向之制约,是选择性地认知域外小说观念的结果;肯定、褒扬中国旧小说,主要从艺术特色和艺术表现方式展开,这主要源于传统小说长期浸染下形成的艺术欣赏习惯、艺术评价标准,也与域外小说译介初期“述译”翻译实践密切相关。
