According to a new study by Health Canada, passive smoking has doubled the risk of breast cancer among women who never smoke. Results from retrospective studies show that women who have long-term exposure to (20 years) second-hand smoke (or passive smoking) environments have a doubling of the risk of breast cancer before menopause and can cause breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The risk of cancer increases by 30%. The study also found that long-term active smoking (35 years or more) women had a 90% risk of breast cancer before menopause and a postmenopausal risk of 60%.
