III.Experience of Publihsng in Africa
Zhejiang Publishing United Group:
Taking advantage of Zhejiang Businessmen
Through marketing research, the Zhejiang Publishing United Group finds that the book price is very expensive in Africa due to the backward local publishing industry. Especially in many west-African countries, the price of one book is even equal to a worker’s half-month salary. Some African countries still have no publishing house till now. Therefore, based on the Zhejiang businessmen and their network in Africa, Zhejiang Publishing United Group started to cooperate with the African publishing industry since 2009, and published various kinds of books which were in urgent need for African people. The majority of these books are about medicine and agriculture, with other categories like culture, education, livelihood and tourism, and languages such as English, French, Spanish and Swahili, which are welcomed by the local people. As to the publication of medical books, in 2009, the Zhejiang Science and Technology Press affiliated with the Group worked together with the Mali Sahara Publishing House and published Manuel De La Prévention Et Du Traitement-Des Maladies Courantes En Afrique. This book introduces more than 40 years’ working experience of Chinese medical teams in Africa. It soon became popular among the local people due to its plain language and useful illustrations. The local media also made commentaries that this book would change the long-time-developed health habit of the Malians consciously. At present, this book has been published four languages- English, French, Spanish and Swahili and available in countries including Mali, Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Kenya andGabon.
This book was written, translated and printed by the Chinese Medical Team, and examined, published by the local publishing house in Africa,. It applied the local book number and was distributed into the local issuing channels. Thhis kind of publishing mode stirs the interest of many African publishers.
Agricultural books is another important content in the cooperative publishing. Most areas of Africa are extremely backward in tillage method and technology, which is of very low modernization. Concerning this, in 2010, the Zhejiang Publishing United Group initiated a cooperative publication program called the “Book Series of Agricultural Technology Development in Africa”. Special versions for Mali, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe and other countries are under publishing. Each special version has been edited according to each country’s unique climate, crop varieties, agricultural structures and the distinctive industries like crop farming, breeding, animal husbandry and fishing. Most parts of the book series were co-edited by both Chinese and African experts.
In August 2013, the Macmillan Publishing Namibia and the Zhejiang Publishing United Group co-published the Agricultural Development and Practical Technology of Africa—Volume of Namibia. This book was written originally in English by a Zhejiang businessman who operates a farm in Namibia, and was published by the Macmillan Publishing Namibia. At present, the author has already accomplished the South African volume of Agricultural Technology of Africa, in which he not only introduces popular agricultural science but also discusses the productivity improvement in some poverty-stricken areas.
Moreover, since 2010, the Zhejiang Publishing United Group has been organizing the Chinese publishing houses to participate in the Nairobi International Book Fair every year. During the 2013 Nairobi International Book Fair, the Group signed a number of co-publishing agreements with the Nairobi University Press, the Kenya Literature Bureau, the Kenya Egerton University Press and the Uganda Fountain Publishing House.
