The origin of footbinding is undoubtedly a difficult problem in the study of Chinese history. Zhang Bangji, the earliest scholar in Song Dynasty who reported footbinding, said in Manchu Manchu: “The footbinding of a woman starts in the modern age and there is no biography of the previous life.” Song and Yuan Dynasties Ming and Qing dynasties scholar, Che Ruoshi, thorough, Yang Shen, Yu Huai, Hu Yinglin, Zhao Yi, Qian Yong and so on footbinding were recorded or verified. Gao Hongxing’s contemporary “foot-binding history” and American scholar Gao Yan-yi’s “foot-binding:” “Worship of Lotus” is a representative work on foot-binding. However, no conclusions have been drawn about the origin of foot-binding. The 800 years of academic practice have proved that it is futile to find a ready-made conclusion about sources of footbinding from ancient books, and its practice is a failure. Its theory is absurd.
