Recent observations reveal that the Communist Party of China has become notably concerned with its future as a ruling party. That is why the question of the CCP’s legitimacy becomes more urgent today. The Party is known for its unique political resilience which enabled the regime to divert major democratic developments in the country and preserve one-party system. However,in the past, the CCP used to rely on mostly coercive means in order to control the population, but today’s social transformations in China make it harder for the Party to maintain its power. Therefore,it is poised to seek ways of regaining public support in the country. For this reason the CCP has been engaging various strategies to maximize its performance, enhance administrative capacity, and governing potentials to gain legitimacy at ideological, structural, and personal levels. This paper is analyzing these strategies with regard to public attitudes and expectations in order to obtain clearer perspective on the future of China’s political regime. It also argues that certain political change is inevitable, but it is likely to occur in a top-down direction.
