Objective: To compare the clirucal therapeutic effect of Chongqing HighIntensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) therapeutic device with intranasalsteroids and Hi-antihistamines in treating persistent allergic thinitispatients. Design: Controlled Prospective. Methods: 95 Patients attending ENT OPD from June 2011 up toFebruary 2012 who had been diagnosed as moderate-severe persistentallergic rhinitis (PER) in accordance to ARIA guidelines (2010revised) .The enrolled patients were divided int0 2 groups: group l andgroup 2. 63patients were in group l and treated by the CZB ultrasoundtherapeutic device developed and produced by Chongqing Haifu (HIFU)and 32 patients were in group 2 and treated with intranasal steroids(Fluticasone propionate) and antihistamines (Loratadine). The benefitswere observed on the first day, lst week, 4th weeks and 12th week, assessing improvement in each individual nasal symptom. Efficacy Measurements: The therapeutic effect was evaluated by totalnasal symptom score (TNSS) and Rhinitis Quality of Life (RQoL),pretreatment (week 0) and post treatments (4 weeks and 12 weeks). Results: The total effective rate of HIFU was 35.53% after l week,82.73% afier 4 weeks and 82.24% after 12 weeks whereas for the controlgroup the total effective rate was 63.61% after l week, 81.29% after 4weeks and 77.55% after 12 weeks. Differences were statisticallysignificant (p<0.05) when symptoms scores were assessed separately. Conclusions: HIFU has proven to be as effective and safe tool in thetreatment of allergic thinitis as conventional drug treatment proposed byARIA guidelines with minimal side effects. The long tenn therapeuticeffect in comparison to INS and antihistamines need to be further studied.
