Vickers indentation is widely used as a method of measuring fracture toughness of ceramic materials,though its validity is sometimes still questioned.Previous fracture toughness formulae are based on the radial median crack system or the Palmqivst crack system.However,most of them are restricted to specific ceramics and ignore lateral cracking.In this work,alumina was selected to study the morphology of lateral cracking and its effects on residual stresses and fracture toughness measurements.
