  The goal of this work is to develop a conceptual model to analyze the nitrous acid (HONO) contributions on visibility simulations and improve the visibility prediction in North China Plain (NCP) being affected by heavy pollution.The HONO plays an important role in the photochemistry of the troposphere due to its photo-dissociation that serves as a significant source of the hydroxyl radical (OH),which is one of the key oxidants in the atmosphere.Direct emissions,gas-phase reactions,and heterogeneous reactions are generally considered as HONO sources.However,detailed formation mechanism of HONO has not been well understood.While impacts of HONO on regional/global air quality are being investigated intensively,the effect of HONO on visibility has not been studied in detail.The visibility in major cities or city clusters of China is severely decreasing with increasing emissions.The intense fog/haze events in NCP in recent years require great efforts to improve the visibility.
