To better understand the brain mechanisms of cognition, the use of a computer-automated behavioral testing method in animal models is an essential component.Touchscreen testing is the ideal method that allows the subject to directly respond to the photographic stimuli appeared on computer screen via a forepaw-touch or nose-poke.The advantages of this method are numerous, and it has been widely used in non-human primate cognitive test. While higher primates may be the most robust model of human cognitive research, prohibitive cost, the long experiment cycle, and animal rights issues have led to the establishment of an economical and easily operated non-human primate animal for studying the basal mechanism of cognitive function. The Chinese tree shrew(Tupaia belangeri chinensis)is the closest relative of primates. However,a systematic study of the parameters that affect learning of tree shrews has not yet been conducted. Here,we used pairwise discrimination test(PDT)system,a part of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery Touchscreen Apparatus,as a detecting procedure to evaluate the cognitive ability of tree shrews. We also presented to rats using the same photographic stimuli to assess whether tree shrew has a higher level of cognition than that of rodents.
