The Australian Antarctic Program has just initiated a ten year strategic plan for its science priorities. The plan is designed to ensure that we deliver strategic research that focuses on understanding the role of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in Earth systems and on ensuring sustainability in all human activities. The big questions in Antarctic science are of global significance and require multi-disciplinary and collaborative approaches if they are to be answered.Along with other Antarctic Treaty members, Australia actively participates and engages in the range of science meetings aimed at encouraging collaborations.Particular collaborative opportunities exist among the nations working in east Antarctica to share in the resources and scientific capital needed to conduct this scale of science.
