Understanding Groundwater Table with the Use of Statistical Modeling in Coastal Plain of Eastern Chi

  This study presents evidence of the direct pulse response of shallow groundwater level to climate factors and basin in acoastal region in Eastern China.Thisstudy aims to establish a statistical relationship among groundwater level, rainfall, evaporation, river stage, and Yellow Sea tide level, as well as to predict groundwater levels with the use of easily measurable climate data.To achieve these objectives, data from twelve wells were monitored over a 12-month period in 2013 in Dongtai, Jiangsu Province.The monitoring data were then compared with the rainfall, evaporation, river stage, and Yellow Sea tidal level data from the same time series.With the use of logistic regression statistics, three distinct conclusions were drawn from this study.First, the main factors affecting groundwater interaction are the climate factors.This study demonstrated quick response among groundwater, rainfall, and evaporation.Second, the nearby river was also a significant factor affecting groundwater level in the study area (p < 0.01).However, the Yellow Sea tide level had no influence on groundwater level.Finally, a triple linear regression model of rainfall, evaporation, and river stage was established for groundwater level management and forecasting.
