Chinese hickory(Carya cathayensis Sarg)is a unique woody oil tree species in China.Intensive management(IM)including heavy-application chemical fertilizer and long-term application of herbicides has resulted in serious soil loss and degradation.A field experiment consisting of four treatments(intercropping Chinese milk vetch(Astragalus sinicus L.),rape(Brassica campestris L.),ryegrass(Lolium perenne L.)and clean tillage)was conducted to study the effects of intercropping grasses on soil organic carbon(SOC)and microbial community functional diversity under Carya cathayensis stand. The results showed that interplanting rape, ryegrass, and Chinese milk vetch under Carya cathayensis stands for 4 years increased total organic carben(TOC)(Fig.1),microbial biomass carbon(MBC),and water-soluble organic carbon(WSOC)by 23.1-24.7,13 8.6-159.7,and 56.2-69.5%,respectively,as compared with clean tillage(Table 1).
