The rodent gustatory system has been described as an excellent experimental platform for studying neural plasticity in the sensory system. The disparities still exist in the literature regarding the responsive properties of cross-regenerated gustatory nerve. Here we tested the gustatory responsiveness of cross-regenerated Chorda tympani (CT) nerve in the absence of the glossopharyngeal nerve (GL) by the whole nerve electrophysiological recording. The responsive sensitivity of NaCl, NaCl adulterated with amiloride, and quinine were assessed by measuring the area under curve of gustatory stimulus-response.The results show that the responsive pattern of cross-regenerated CT to a series of concentrations of NaCl and quinine was similar to the sham-operated GL nerve, and amiloride had no suppress effect on the response of cross-regenerated CT to NaCl, which is also similar to sham-operated GL nerve. These results indicate cross-regenerated CT nerve adopts the responsive patterns of GL,not the CT nerve.
