China set up a national asparagus R&D system in 2010 by a Special Fund for Agro-scientific Research in the Public Interest with strategic objective of bring asparagus from agriculture into industry.It consists of main sectors in agriculture: breeding, cultivation, pest and disease control, and post-harvesting.Several cultivars released from the breeding program are well adapted to local climate condition in China.Different cultivation models were developed in different regions including organic culture.Another component is its use for rehabilitation of sandy waste land and saline and alkaline land, combining ecological benefit with the economic benefit.The most significant part lies in the medical function and food processing.Three medicines were approved for treatment of cancer.
