Grain appearance in rice is directly related to grain size and grain chalkiness.An indica variety with small grain size and low chalkiness rate was crossed with a japonica variety with large grain size and high chalkiness rate to construct a set of recombinant inbred lines(RILs)which was used to identify quantitative trait loci(QTLs)controlling grain quality traits.A genetic linkage map was constructed with 196 simple sequence repeat(SSR)markers.A total of 29 QTLs were identified,including three for grain length(GL),five for grain width(GW),four for length-width ratio(LWR),three for grain thickness(GT),five for 1000-grain weight(TGW),five for white belly rate(WB)and four for white core rate(WC).
