Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of bridges and other infrastructural assets has in some countries been explicitly benchmarked by Life Cycle Cost Studies during the last two decades.This allows for cost optimal managing of infrastructure.The societys increasing awareness of whole life environmental impact related to infrastructure is reflected by the fact that Infrastructural Managers (IMs) now also request Life Cycle Assessments to assist their decision making.Two recent research projects reflect this awareness:MAINLINE (MAINtenance,renewaL and Improvement of rail transport infrastructure to reduce Economic and environmental impact,EU 7th framework programme) and ETSI (Nordic research project on Life Cycle Cost,Environment and Aesthetics for road bridges).
