Crackle is a well known annoying component of supersonic jet noise described as exhibiting random bursts of compression sound waves followed by shallow expansion waves.Measurements made at the Queen Mary,University of London acoustic chamber for supersonic jets, indicate that crackle noise can also be found for cold under expanded jets in addition to the current belief that it existed only in hot jets.
