TarPriGO: A New Method to Prioritize miRNA Targets Based on Gene Ontology

  Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in post-transcription by repressing translation or causing mRNA degradation.A single miRNA may be involved in the expression regulation of a large number of genes.But for most miRNAs, only a very limited number of targets are verified by experiments.Several algorithms have been developed to predict the target genes of miRNA, such as Targetscan, microtv4, miRanda, miRTarget2, pictar and PITA.They are mainly based on sequence matches, G-U wobble or thermodynamic duplex stability.These methods can identify the potential targets with some accuracy, but the false positive rate is still high.We developed an algorithm called TarPriGO to prioritize miRNA targets by integrating Gene Ontology (GO) information with the prediction results of different algorithms.
