We report a novel synthetic methodology for the fabrication of colloidally stable, biocompatible and monodisperse hollow iron oxide anisotropic nanostructures by utilizing silica-coated hollow PtS tetrapods as a nucleation template. The branched, hollow morphology of the iron oxide nanostructures allowed the exhibition of high surface to volume ratios and unique shape-dependent magnetic properties.
