The effect of cyano and methyl substitution on the fluorescence behavior of 1,2-bis(pyridylphenyl)ethene 1-4 was investigated(Figure 1).1 While non-substituted 1,2-bis(pyridylphenyl)ethene 1 has fluorescence quantum yield of 97 %in CH2Cl2 solution,cyano-and methyl-substituted ones 2-4 fluoresce very little.
