Echocardiography has proved to be an extremely useful imaging technology for documenting the consequences of myocardial isehemia in patients presenting with a suspected diagnosis of an acute coronary syndrome (ASC).Multiple studies of chest pain patients have cornsistently shown that wall motion abnormalities have a high sensitivity for the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia / infarction.Furthermore, newer techniques allow direct assessment of abnormal myocardial perfusion using an intravenous echocardiographic contrast agent in these patients.Many complications 0fACS are well documented by echocardiography.Also, life-threatening non-ACS causes of chest pain, such as pulmonary embolism and aortic dissection, can be identified by echocardiography.
