The objective of this study is to construct a new methodology for assessing system the quality of urban soils by physical, chemical and biological interpretation.Land creating history, use and management of parks,physico-chemical properties of soils were examined for urban parks of western Tokyo,Aichi and Osaka Prefecture,Japan. The obtained results clarified that the physico-chemical feature of the second layer was regulated by the stress of miscellaneous urban fill depending on specific land creating history of each park. While that of the surface layer was regulated by the use and management of the parks.A diagnostic surface layer was extracted for each use division in the park; forest, grassland and bare land.A two-dimension coordination system composed of grading method and use was proposed to subdivide urban park soils into soil units.Nature richness was evaluated for each soil unit defined by examining soil animal communities. For this purpose, not only parks but also field athletic area and campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology in Kanagawa Prefecture were investigated. It was clarified that soil biodiversity and direction of soil transition were regulated by the stress of vegetation management and artifact materials that depend on initial conditionof creation.Tentative maps of soil classification and soil evaluation were produced based on the recognition of pedon units determined by the obtained evaluation on physical, chemical and biological properties of urban soils. The methodology of assess urban soils developed in this study are expected to utilize for urban park planning.
