By pot experiment, the heavy metal speciation in sewage sludge and its effects on plant in two contrasting soils have been studied. The pH and NO3-N of soil solution have changed during the pot experiment culture. Before planting the pH of soil solution is much higher than that of plant harvest, while its NO3-N concentration of the sludge-treated soils was decreased with sludge application rate. After plant harvest, the pH decreased a little while the NO3-N concentration increased remarkably. The total Cu in the sludge-amended soils raised compared with unamended controls, while the distributions of heavy metals among various chemical forms were different between the two contrasting soils. In red soil, the higher contents of Cu extracted by HOAc reagent were clearly found when it contrast to yellow brown earth, and there was a positive correlation between HOAc-soluble and soil solution.Furthermore, sludge application can improve the soil fertilizers, increase the plant yield.
