At the end of the 16th century, after several generations of efforts, Western missionaries finally opened the southern gate of China. In order to achieve their missionary purposes, they used watches as a gift for research, which attracted the interest of the Ming and Qing emperors and their subjects and prompted Chinese folk craftsmen to copy them, thus promoting the formation and development of modern Chinese watchmaking. This article collected notes and documentary records of Western missionaries, reviewed local folk records, conducted preliminary induction, and conducted analysis and discussion.
