Interfacing Electrochromatography in Microchips with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry fo

  Electrochromatography in capillaries or microfluidic channels combines the differential electromigration of electrophoresis with the differential partitioning of chromatography.Thereby,it gains the increasing attention in the analysis of food and natural products,or in pharmaceutical,forensic,industrial,and environmental analysis1.With the use of a ultra-highly sensitive and element-specific detector named inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS),speciation analysis of arsenic,chromium and selenium by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography was exercised2-3.Obviously,the blemish lies in the low phase ratio for open-tubular capillary columns.Due to the main benefits including easy fabrication,elimination of bubble formation in running,the monolithic columns have gained many attentions4.In this work,we first reported the feasibility of microchip electrochromatography interfaced with ICP-MS (MCEC-ICP-MS) for elemental speciation.Two monolithic polymers (poly (butyl methacrylate (BMA)-co-ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA)-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS)) monolith and poly (BMA-co-EDMA-co-trimethyl ammonium chloride (META)) monolith) in channels of microchips were fabricated.The channel design of the microchip and the hybrid system instrumentation was similar to our previous work5.The only distinction came from the buffer waste channel,which was eliminated here.The negative potential was applied on a hollow stainless steel tubing,through which the makeup liquid was flowed.The monolithic polymer was created in the 4.5-cm separation channel from UV-initiated polymerization6 after vinylized pretreating to microchannels by 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate.Negatively (AMPS) or positively (META) charged moieties at 0.5%wt was added in the monomer to enhance EOF.Figure 1 and 2 demonstrate the electrochromatographic separation of iodine species by the META-functionalized column and multiplex metal ions using the AMPS-functionalized column.In the near future,the MCEC-ICP-MS system would be optimized and applied in elemental speciation analysis (Hg,As,etc.) of real samples in food,environmental and biological areas.
